Ceiling Collapse Injures Two at Corinth Hospital Emergency Department

On Tuesday, a section of the pseudo‑ceiling in the newly renovated Emergency Department (TEP) of the General Hospital of Corinth collapsed. The incident occurred shortly after the department was inaugurated by Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis about a month earlier. No patients were harmed, but a doctor and a nurse sustained minor injuries.

The collapse was attributed to a construction error: a curtain was fixed directly to the plastic tiles of the false ceiling rather than a stable point, causing the tiles to detach under pressure. The renovation, funded with €2.6 million from the Recovery Fund in partnership with the Hospital of Aegio, also includes ongoing energy‑upgrade works. In response, the Greek Public Hospital Workers Federation (POEDIN), led by Mihalis Giannakos, called for an immediate technical inspection to ensure safety of the facilities.

The incident has raised concerns about construction quality and safety standards in Greek public hospitals.
