Celaya begins construction of new Poniente Cemetery

Construction has officially commenced on the new Panteón Poniente in the San Isidro de Crespo community of Celaya, Guanajuato. The project aims to address the saturation of the city's existing North and South cemeteries, which have been in operation since 1890 and 1972, respectively.

The new cemetery will span nearly four hectares and provide 7,692 burial spaces. Designed with a sustainable concept, the facility will include a chapel, green areas, intensive tree planting, rest areas, paved access, and essential services such as water, electricity, and drainage.

The project is being executed in three stages with an initial investment of 19 million pesos. To optimize the public budget, the municipality is utilizing its own workforce and machinery from the Public Works and Municipal Services departments rather than hiring external contractors. The first stage of the cemetery is projected to begin operations in February 2027.
