Celaya reports 834 missing person cases in Guanajuato

Celaya has recorded 834 cases of missing persons in Guanajuato so far this year, according to a report by Red Lupa as of May 16, 2026. This figure represents a 56% increase compared to the 534 cases documented in the municipality during 2025.

Celaya currently leads the state in disappearances, surpassing other municipalities such as León, with 628 cases, and Irapuato, with 601 cases. Other notable figures include Salamanca with 305 and Pénjamo with 280.

Local authorities have offered differing perspectives on the data. Pablo Muñoz Huitrón, Secretary of Citizen Security, suggested that the figures require verification against investigation files from the Guanajuato State Attorney General's Office. He noted that while emergency 911 reports are tracked, many individuals are categorized as not located, found, or still missing, and he dismissed any direct link between declining homicide rates and the rise in disappearances. Mayor Juan Miguel Ramírez Sánchez described the statistics as alarming.
