Celestial events including planetary alignment and meteor shower approach
A series of notable celestial events are occurring, including a planetary alignment and optimal viewing conditions for Mercury.
Mercury has reached its greatest western elongation, providing a favorable window for observers to view the planet against the morning sky. Due to its proximity to the sun, it is often obscured, but current conditions offer increased brightness and contrast for detection in the east-north-east direction before sunrise.
Additionally, a “planet parade” is expected, featuring an arc of six planets: Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. While Mars and Saturn are visible to the naked eye, Uranus requires binoculars and Neptune requires a telescope. This alignment is expected to be most visible in the 60 to 90 minutes before sunrise.
Coinciding with these events, the Perseid meteor shower is reaching its peak. Associated with debris from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, the shower may allow observers to see up to 100 meteors per hour under clear skies, aided by the dark conditions of a new moon.
