Celia Sredni de Birbragher celebrates 50 years of ArtNexus
Celia Sredni de Birbragher, founder of the influential art publication ArtNexus, is marking the 50th anniversary of her magazine. Originally launched in July 1976 as ‘Arte en Colombia’, the publication was inspired by the lack of press coverage for Colombian artist Carlos Rojas following his success at the São Paulo Biennial.
In its early years, the magazine made headlines when a bold cover featuring a nude by Darío Morales caused two banks to withdraw their advertising, leading to a sold-out issue. In 1991, the magazine rebranded as ArtNexus, established an office in Miami, and began publishing in English to connect Latin American artists with a global audience of collectors and museums.
To navigate declining advertising revenue in 2008, de Birbragher introduced collaborations with artists to create limited-edition works for funding. The 50th anniversary was celebrated in September 2026 at the ARTBO fair in Bogotá with an exhibition featuring works from 50 artists across ten countries, including Alfredo Jaar, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Liliana Porter, and Carmen Herrera.
