Celina Leão elected as first woman to govern Distrito Federal

Celina Leão (PP) has been re-elected as the Governor of the Distrito Federal in the 2026 second-round elections. With over 90% of the votes counted, Leão secured approximately 57% of the valid votes, defeating Leandro Grass (PT), who received roughly 43%.

This victory marks a historic milestone as Leão becomes the first woman to be directly elected to lead the Distrito Federal. While other women have held the position previously, they did so as vice-governors assuming office due to resignations. Leão, who has served as governor since March 2026 following the resignation of Ibaneis Rocha, will begin her full term in January 2027.

Following the announcement, Leandro Grass contacted Leão and her vice-governor, Gustavo Rocha (Republicanos), to congratulate them on the result, emphasizing the importance of democracy. The election saw significant voter turnout, with many citizens arriving early at polling stations to participate in the second round.
