Cell phones near the bed impair sleep and brain regeneration, researchers say
Research indicates that keeping a mobile phone within a few centimetres of the head while sleeping disrupts natural brain restoration processes. According to longevity specialist Diego Suárez, proximity to the device lowers melatonin production, alters brain‑wave patterns and hampers entry into deep sleep, leading to reduced cognitive performance the next day. He advises placing phones at least one metre away from the sleeping area or using a traditional alarm clock.
French health authorities echo similar concerns, noting that while the World Health Organization found no link between mobile‑phone use and brain cancer, the blue‑light emission of screens suppresses melatonin and notification alerts keep the brain alert. The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health (ANSES) recommends keeping phones on a bedside table rather than under a pillow and, if needed, switching them to airplane mode during the night.
