Cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason Debuts at Sydney Opera House

British virtuoso cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, 27, is performing his first concert at the Sydney Opera House. He will appear with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra under chief conductor Simone Young, playing Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Kanneh-Mason, who won the BBC Young Musician award in 2016 and played at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding before a global audience of roughly two billion, recorded the same concerto in 2019 with Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra. He describes his relationship with the instrument as a literal hug, saying the cello “literally rests on your heart”. The debut follows his growing international reputation and is praised as a significant addition to Sydney’s cultural calendar.
