Cellular longevity research focuses on senescence and muscle fat biomarkers

Research into cellular longevity is increasingly focused on understanding the mechanisms of aging to improve healthspan. A key area of study is cellular senescence, a state where cells stop dividing but remain metabolically active. These senescent cells release inflammatory molecules through the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), which contributes to age-related conditions such as cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and cancer.

To accelerate the development of anti-aging therapies, scientists are seeking robust biomarkers of biological age. Current research highlights myosteatosis—the infiltration of adipose tissue into skeletal muscle—as an emerging independent contributor to metabolic disorders and declining muscle function. Establishing reliable measures of biological age is considered essential for rapidly assessing the effectiveness of interventions without relying solely on long-term lifespan studies.
