Celso Amorim warns of eroding international norms

Celso Amorim, special advisor to the Presidency of Brazil, has warned that the world is entering a dangerous era characterized by the erosion of international rules and norms. Describing the current global landscape as “a world in the flesh,” Amorim noted that the breakdown of established frameworks is occurring across all sectors, including the military sphere.

Amorim highlighted several points of global instability, including the conflict in Palestine, United States actions in Venezuela, and trade tariffs implemented by the Donald Trump administration. He argued that while previous international systems were often criticized as biased, they provided mechanisms for nations to defend their positions and achieve results. In the current environment, he questioned how states can preserve their sovereignty when the use of force is increasing.

To address these challenges, Amorim advocated for the strengthening of Brazil’s national defense. He emphasized that this protection must extend beyond traditional military capabilities to include strategic technological and economic sectors, specifically mentioning artificial intelligence and rare earth elements as vital to national autonomy.
