Celtic leaders sign memorandum seeking independence from UK

Leaders from Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland met at the Celtic nations summit in Cardiff to sign a memorandum of understanding regarding their right to independence from the United Kingdom. The signatories, including Scottish First Minister John Swinney of the SNP, Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth of Plaid Cymru, and Northern Ireland’s Michelle O’Neill of Sinn Féin, declared that the future of their nations is tied to the European Union.

The leaders called for constitutional reform and urged the UK government to prepare for a future involving potential referendums on self-determination. John Swinney stated that the dynamics for constitutional reform are ‘undeniable’ and that Westminster must prepare for a post-breakup future.

Analysts have noted that such movements could destabilize a key NATO member and a nuclear power. While some view the push as a natural effort toward decentralization, others warn that the potential secession of these regions could significantly impact the United Kingdom’s international standing and European security architecture.
