Celtic Women's Poetry Anthology Released by UK and Irish Universities

Academics from five universities – Aberystwyth University, the University of Connecticut, University College Dublin, the University of Edinburgh and the National University of Ireland Galway – have published an anthology titled *Women’s Poetry from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, 1400–1800*. The collection brings together previously unpublished or untranslated poems and songs by women poets from Wales, Ireland and Scotland, presented in the original Celtic languages (Welsh, Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Scots and Ulster Scots) alongside English translations.

The project, launched in 2013 by Professor Sarah Prescott (now Vice‑Principal and Head of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Edinburgh), aims to reshape the literary canon by highlighting both well‑known and marginalised female voices across four centuries. Co‑editor Dr Cathryn Charnell‑White of Aberystwyth’s Department of Welsh and Celtic Studies says the anthology offers new insights into the lives and work of poets ranging from countesses to maidservants, and paves the way for a forthcoming edited volume of comparative essays.
