Cem Akaş warns of e-cigarette dangers following son's death

Can Akaş, the 19-year-old son of Turkish author and publisher Cem Akaş and photographer Esra Özdoğan, has died suddenly from heart failure. The young design student, who was preparing to begin studies at the Domus Academy in Milan, passed away on October 19.

Following the tragedy, Cem Akaş issued a public warning regarding the dangers of e-cigarettes and liquid nicotine products. He expressed regret, stating that if he had taken the use of e-cigarettes more seriously, his son might still be alive. The family has announced plans to launch awareness campaigns to educate parents and youth about the health risks associated with these products.

Medical experts have corroborated the potential severity of such products. Prof. Dr. Ertuğrul Okuyan of the Turkish Cardiology Association noted that e-cigarettes and puff devices can cause significant damage to the heart, lungs, and vascular system, often being as harmful as traditional cigarettes. Prof. Dr. Oğuz Kılınç of the Turkish Thorax Society compared the chemical impact of e-cigarettes to a potent poison that can cause severe bodily harm from the first use.
