CEMAC states develop unified energy information system

Member states of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) are working to establish a unified Community Energy Information System (SIE-CEMAC). During meetings held in Libreville, Gabon, experts from Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Chad addressed the challenges posed by incomplete and incomparable energy data.

The initiative aims to harmonize the collection, processing, dissemination, and archiving of energy statistics across the sub-region. This standardized approach is intended to improve regional planning, evaluate household energy needs, and better prepare for infrastructure investments. The system will facilitate data exchange between national statistical offices, the CEMAC Commission, and the African Energy Commission (AFREC).

For countries like Chad, the project is critical for improving electrification efforts, expanding renewable energy, and enhancing rural electricity access. The development of this system aligns with broader regional efforts to modernize statistics, including work on the SDMX data sharing standard involving the African Development Bank and the United Nations Population Fund.
