Cemeteries in Slovenia targeted by brass thefts and vandalism

Unknown perpetrators have stolen brass statues, vases, and candle lanterns from cemeteries in Šentjernej, Gorenje Gradišče, and Otok. The thefts also resulted in damage to several monuments. In Šentjernej, it is estimated that approximately 150 graves were targeted.

The Novo Mesto Police Administration confirmed that an investigation is underway and has already recovered some of the stolen items. The items were located at a company in Brežice that buys non-ferrous metals. Following the seizure, police obtained information regarding the individuals who brought the items for sale.

Authorities have not yet determined the total number of damaged monuments or the full extent of the financial loss, as not all victims have filed reports. Police are urging anyone who notices theft or damage to monuments to report it immediately.
