Cemetery candles: Tips for longer burning and proper disposal
As All Saints' Day approaches, practical advice has emerged regarding the use and disposal of cemetery candles (znicze). To extend the burning time of candle inserts, methods include freezing them for several hours to harden the wax, trimming the wick to a length of 5 to 10 millimeters to ensure even burning, and adding a pinch of salt to the wax to raise its melting point.
Regarding waste management, disposing of used candles correctly is a significant challenge. Estimates from the Polish Recycling Association suggest that approximately 120,000 tons of waste are generated in Polish cemeteries annually. According to the Ministry of Climate and Environment, candles containing wax should not be placed in glass recycling bins. Generally, used candles and inserts should be disposed of in mixed waste containers (black bins). This rule applies even to clean glass candles or LED versions, as municipal regulations vary and specific recycling paths for these items are often not clearly defined in standard segregation guides.
