Cemetery thefts and desecrations reported in Germany and Australia

Authorities in Germany and Australia are addressing separate incidents of cemetery theft and desecration.

In Freiburg, Germany, a 63-year-old funeral worker, Karl-Heinz K., was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for desecrating at least 250 bodies between 2013 and 2024. He used tools to forcibly remove gold teeth and jewelry from remains, amassing approximately 250,000 euros in stolen precious metals and gems. His wife, Simone K., received an 18-month suspended sentence for assisting in the sale of the stolen goods, which the couple used to fund luxury cars, real estate, and theme park passes.

In Melbourne, Australia, thieves stole over 150 copper grave markers from the Cheltenham Pioneer Cemetery between September 8 and October 8. The stolen items include markers for war veterans and infants, with individual values estimated between 600 and 2,500 Australian dollars. Victoria Police are currently investigating the theft, which is believed to be motivated by the resale of the copper as scrap metal.
