Cemig clarifies responsibility for sidewalk utility covers
The energy distributor Cemig has clarified that the presence of its name on a metal sidewalk cover does not automatically mean the company is responsible for its maintenance. According to Aneel Resolution No. 1.000, responsibility depends on the energy delivery point.
For customers with underground connections linked to Cemig’s overhead network, the consumer is responsible for the entire set installed from the pole connection point, including underground cables, junction boxes, and covers. Conversely, boxes that are part of Cemig’s own underground network infrastructure remain the company's responsibility for maintenance.
Felipe Martins, Cemig’s underground network supervisor, noted that the inscription often simply indicates that electrical cables pass through that location, rather than defining ownership of the structure.
