Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command, recently visited the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea, describing the deployment as one of the most operationally intense and consequential of the modern era. The aircraft carrier has been supporting U.S. operations against Iran, including a blockade of Iranian ports, and has set a record for consecutive days at sea, exceeding 240 days without a port call.

The visit follows reports from sailors' families and Democratic lawmakers regarding deteriorating conditions on board, including supply shortages, poor sanitation, and mental health concerns. Some reports indicated sailors had attempted to jump overboard due to low morale. While Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed these reports as ‘completely misrepresented,’ Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao acknowledged that a small number of mental health cases were treated with no loss of life and noted that the Navy is working to provide additional resilience counselors and social workers to the ship.

Admiral Cooper emphasized that mental health is a priority, noting that the USS Abraham Lincoln currently has one of the lowest numbers of mental health-related cases among the Navy’s 11 active aircraft carriers. However, he acknowledged that prolonged service at sea is uniquely challenging. President Donald Trump dismissed concerns regarding the length of the deployment, stating it was ‘not nearly long enough.’ The USS George Washington is expected to replace the Lincoln in the Middle East soon.
