Center Party official questions notifying neighbors of convicted sex offenders

Lena-Maria Jansson, a political secretary for the Center Party in Uppsala, has drawn scrutiny following comments regarding whether neighbors should be informed when a person convicted of sexual offenses against children moves into an area.

In a recorded interview conducted by journalist Christian Peterson, Jansson initially responded to the question of informing residents with the counter-question, ‘What does it matter?’ She argued that a threat only exists if the convicted individual actively seeks contact with children for sexual purposes.

Jansson further reasoned that once a person has served their sentence, they have fulfilled their obligation to society. During the discussion, she compared the long-term consequences for a convicted sex offender to those of someone convicted of shoplifting, asking, ‘Should one never be allowed to enter a department store again?’

It remains unclear whether Jansson’s statements represent her personal views or the official stance of the Center Party, as the party had not responded at the time of publication.
