Central American independence histories and dates

Central American nations celebrate independence through varying historical paths. While Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica commemorate their break from Spanish rule on September 15, Panama and Belize observe different dates due to their unique colonial histories.

Panama was part of the Viceroyalty of New Granada rather than the Captaincy General of Guatemala. It declared independence from Spain on November 28, 1821, later joining Gran Colombia. Panama eventually separated from Colombia on November 3, 1903, to establish its republic. Belize followed a different trajectory under British administration as British Honduras. It officially became a Crown colony in 1862 and achieved independence from the United Kingdom on September 21, 1981.

Guatemala City served as the epicenter for the regional independence proclamation in 1821. Historical sites such as the Plaza de la Constitución and the National Palace of Culture remain significant landmarks reflecting the region's transition from colonial rule to sovereign nationhood.
