Central and Eastern Europe gains geopolitical and security importance

Central and Eastern Europe is gaining geopolitical importance as the NATO eastern flank becomes a critical security zone. NATO has significantly increased its deterrence capabilities, deploying nine multinational battle groups across countries including Poland, Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, and Slovakia. Recent initiatives include the ‘Eastern Sentry’ operation launched in September 2025 to strengthen flank protection and the ‘Baltic Sentry’ mission to secure underwater infrastructure.

Economic and regional development are also central to the stability of this area. The II EU Border Cohesion and Development Forum will be held on November 4 in Białystok, focusing on the theme ‘Strong Regions. Secure Europe. New Geography of European Resilience.’ The forum aims to move from diagnosing challenges to proposing concrete solutions for EU cohesion policy for 2028–2034. Discussions will address how to finance border region development, enhance security, and retain skilled professionals to ensure that the security of the European Union is anchored in the strength of its eastern regions.
