Central Asian nations diversify ties as Uzbekistan launches satellite with China

Central Asian nations, including Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, are increasingly diversifying their geopolitical allegiances between Russia, China, and the West. This shift is attributed to the perceived weakening of Moscow's influence following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

A significant symbol of this changing dynamic is the launch of the Samarkand-2028 hyperspectral satellite on August 5, 2026. Developed through a collaboration between Uzbekcosmos and the Chinese company STAR VISION, the project demonstrates Uzbekistan's ability to access modern technology and Earth observation data without relying on Russian infrastructure.

While these nations are not openly breaking ties with Russia, they are expanding their strategic maneuverability. This trend suggests a move away from the traditional post-Soviet dependency on Moscow toward new partnerships, particularly with China, in sectors such as precision agriculture and urban planning.
