Romania financial markets: Euro falls and BVB index closes lower
The National Bank of Romania (BNR) reported mixed currency and commodity movements for October 12, 2026. The euro saw a slight decrease against the leu, trading at 5.3373 lei, while the US dollar appreciated to 4.7714 lei. The British pound also rose to 6.3160 lei, whereas the Swiss franc saw a marginal decline to 5.7273 lei.
Gold prices experienced a slight dip, with one gram valued at 639.8793 lei. Despite this minor decrease, the price remains higher than the levels recorded on October 8.
In the capital markets, the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) closed its first trading session of the week in the red. The main BET index fell by 0.44%. High-volume trades were led by Electrica, Banca Transilvania, and Hidroelectrica.
Looking ahead, CFA Romania analysts have projected that the euro could reach between 5.4 and 5.5 lei by the end of 2027, driven by inflation differentials and budget deficits. Meanwhile, BNR has maintained its reference interest rate at 6.5%, with analysts suggesting this level may persist until mid-2027 due to rising inflation risks.
