Bolivia Central Bank implements measures to stabilize dollar exchange rate

The Central Bank of Bolivia (BCB) has implemented several emergency measures to stabilize the national currency following a period of rapid dollar appreciation. To absorb liquidity and reduce demand for US dollars, the BCB established a Restricted Monetary Reserve, requiring multiple and public banks to immobilize 3 percent of certain national currency deposits for a period of 180 days.

In an effort to mitigate exchange market volatility, the BCB also began offering US dollars to financial institutions. Following these interventions, the official exchange rate saw a decline from a peak of Bs 12.64 on September 9 to Bs 12.42 on September 10, 2026. One specific action included making $35 million available to the private banking sector at a rate of Bs 12.10.

Economists and local analysts have expressed varying views on these developments. While the measures aim to curb the rising cost of the dollar, some warn that reducing circulating liquidity could impact the purchase of essential goods and affect industrial production. Meanwhile, the broader economic climate remains critical, with calls from the private sector for urgent decisions to address the underlying crisis and stimulate investment.
