Cuba introduces new 10,000 and 20,000 peso banknotes

The Central Bank of Cuba (BCC) has introduced new high-denomination banknotes of 10,000 and 20,000 pesos to facilitate banking operations and adapt to current economic conditions. The 10,000 peso note features Haydée Santamaría, while the 20,000 peso note features Vilma Espín. These new denominations join the 2,000 and 5,000 peso notes already in circulation.

Juana Lilia Delgado Portal, president of the BCC, stated that the update aims to respond to pricing conditions and monetary circulation needs. The move is part of a broader banking reform intended to modernize the sector, increase efficiency, and incorporate new actors, including private and foreign capital. The reform focuses on four areas: capitalization, credit and savings, innovation, and the exchange market.

While authorities present the move as a way to strengthen the Cuban peso and improve financial services, the announcement has drawn sarcastic reactions on social media. Some users expressed concerns that high-denomination notes are a sign of persistent inflation and questioned the banking system's ability to distribute the new cash effectively.
