Central Bank of Egypt: Interbank settlements hit 219 trillion pounds
The Central Bank of Egypt reported that interbank payments in local currency via the Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system reached approximately 219.011 trillion Egyptian pounds during the first eight months of 2026. This volume was processed through roughly 1.993 million transactions.
The RTGS system is a critical component of the national payment infrastructure, designed to settle high-value and high-importance payment orders within the country. It is classified as a systemically important payment system due to its role in maintaining the stability and efficiency of the financial system. By managing large-scale financial operations, the system helps mitigate risks that could impact the broader economy and enhances the management of liquidity within the Egyptian banking sector.
