Nigeria's CBN and Finance Ministry sign MOU to coordinate economic policy
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Ministry of Finance have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to institutionalize coordination between monetary and fiscal policies. The agreement, signed in Abuja by CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso and Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele, establishes a formal framework for regular consultation and information exchange regarding government cash management, debt issuance, liquidity forecasting, and macroeconomic analysis.
This move aims to ensure that government spending and borrowing do not conflict with the CBN’s efforts to manage inflation and exchange rate stability. The coordination comes as the CBN transitions toward an inflation-targeting framework.
Simultaneously, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is scheduled to hold its 307th meeting on September 21 and 22. The committee faces a complex decision regarding the benchmark interest rate, which has been held at 26.5 percent since July. While headline inflation eased to 15.39 percent in August from 15.43 percent in July, and core inflation fell to 13.29 percent, analysts and experts remain divided. Some, such as Prof. Uche Uwaleke, suggest a 50 basis point reduction is justified by moderating inflation and improved foreign exchange reserves, which reached $54.61 billion by mid-September. Others anticipate the rate may be held steady to ensure disinflation is durable against risks like rising energy costs and global economic volatility.
