Central Bank of Nigeria seeks to deepen Nigeria–China financial ties

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) held a high-level business and financial roundtable in Beijing to strengthen the financial corridor between Nigeria and China. The engagement, themed ‘Strengthening the Nigeria–China Financial Corridor’, aimed to identify barriers to financial flows and discuss ways to enhance banking relationships and investment channels.

CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso emphasized the importance of encouraging Chinese financial institutions to participate more broadly in Nigerian markets, specifically through investment in naira-denominated instruments. Cardoso noted that while trade-related payments from Nigeria to China are significant, there is a need to increase investment flows and export proceeds into Nigeria to create a more balanced economic relationship.

The roundtable included Nigerian Ambassador to China, Abdulrahman Dambazau, and CBN Deputy Governor for Economic Policy, Philip Ikeazor. Discussions also featured business leaders such as Festus Mbisiogu of Blue Diamond Group and Chief Diana Chen of CIG Motors, focusing on translating macroeconomic stability into increased investment and more developed financial markets.
