Central Bank of Nigeria sees massive demand in OMO auctions
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has experienced significant investor interest in its Open Market Operations (OMO) auctions, with recent bidding activity far exceeding the amounts offered. In one recent auction, investors submitted approximately ₦6.1 trillion in bids for ₦1 trillion worth of securities, representing demand more than six times the initial offer. The CBN allotted roughly ₦2.3 trillion, with a heavy focus on longer-dated instruments.
In a separate liquidity management effort, the CBN floated ₦2.5 trillion in OMO bills to offset approximately ₦2.43 trillion in maturing repayments. This auction included various tenors, with longer-dated notes making up 80% of the offer.
Total subscriptions for September reached approximately ₦20.6 trillion, an increase from ₦18.72 trillion in August. This surge in demand is partly attributed to the CBN opening OMO access to individuals, companies, and non-bank firms through deposit money banks. These operations serve as a key tool for the central bank to manage liquidity within the financial system.
