Central Bank of Sri Lanka releases August 2026 Monetary Policy Report
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has released its second Monetary Policy Report for 2026, as mandated by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Act, No. 16 of 2023. The biannual report provides a forward-looking analysis of the nation's economic trajectory, focusing on inflation, growth, and macroeconomic stability.
Key findings indicate that headline inflation, which rose from a 2% average in the first quarter of 2026, is expected to remain elevated in the short term before moving toward a 5% target. This increase was attributed to global energy price shocks and domestic fuel adjustments. To combat this, the CBSL tightened monetary policy in May 2026, ending an accommodative period that had been in place since mid-2023.
Economic indicators show that real GDP grew by 5.1% in the first quarter of 2026. While the external sector faced challenges from geopolitical tensions and increased vehicle imports—leading to a current account deficit in the first half of the year—remittances provided some cushion. Additionally, the fiscal sector showed strength through revenue-based consolidation during the first five months of the year.
