Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey celebrates 95th anniversary

The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey is celebrating its 95th anniversary. The establishment of the bank was driven by the goal of strengthening political independence with economic independence following the Turkish War of Independence.

The process began with discussions at the 1923 Izmir Economic Congress regarding a national state bank. In 1927, Finance Minister Abdülhalik Renda submitted a draft law for its creation. To ensure stability, the government sought international expertise, including reports from Dr. Gerard Vissering of the Dutch Central Bank and advice from Italian expert Count Volpi.

The legal framework was finalized with contributions from Professor Leon Morf. The Turkish Grand National Assembly accepted the bill on June 11, 1930, and the Central Bank Law No. 1715 was published in the Official Gazette on June 30, 1930. The bank officially commenced operations on October 3, 1931.
