Central Bank of Turkey revises Net Errors and Omissions and reports reserve growth
The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (TCMB) has announced significant revisions to its Financial Account, resulting in a major reduction of the cumulative Net Errors and Omissions (NEO). For the period between January 2014 and May 2026, the cumulative NEO has been revised from minus $34.3 billion to minus $14.5 billion. The most substantial change occurred in the 2023-2026 period, where the negative accumulation dropped from $57.8 billion to $23.5 billion.
These adjustments stem from three primary methodological changes. First, the bank began utilizing SWIFT data to better compile the overseas deposit movements of domestic residents. Second, the bank integrated profits and losses from financial derivative transactions, such as swaps and forwards, into the Financial Account. Third, the bank improved the separation of domestic and foreign currency effective movements within the banking system. TCMB emphasized that these revisions do not alter the current account balance but rather improve the accuracy and consistency of balance of payments statistics.
In separate weekly data, the TCMB reported a significant increase in total reserves for the week of August 7. Total reserves rose by $13.918 billion to reach $178.366 billion. This growth was driven by a $7.211 billion increase in gross foreign exchange reserves, bringing them to $71.022 billion, and a $6.708 billion increase in gold reserves, which reached $107.345 billion.
