Central Bank of Türkiye resumes one-week repo auctions
The Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye (TCMB) has announced the resumption of one-week repo auctions, which had been suspended since March 1, 2026, due to market volatility following regional conflicts. This move marks a return to standard liquidity management operations.
While the official policy rate remains at 37%, the resumption of these auctions effectively lowers the banking sector's funding costs from the 40% overnight lending rate to the 37% repo rate. Economists and market analysts have described this as a 'veiled interest rate cut' or a signal of policy normalization. Some experts, such as İbrahim Burkay of the Bursa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, noted that this 3-percentage-point reduction in funding costs should be reflected in commercial credit rates to support industrial production.
However, the move has sparked debate. Economist Mahfi Eğilmez cautioned that it is too early to declare a formal interest rate cut and warned that easing measures in a high-inflation environment could pressure the currency. Meanwhile, Bank of America analysts suggested that while this step normalizes liquidity, a formal policy rate cut might not occur until October, depending on inflation trends and domestic demand. The next Monetary Policy Committee meeting is scheduled for September 10, 2026.
