Venezuela official dollar rate rises amid new banking fees

Venezuela's official exchange rate has seen continued upward movement, with the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV) setting the dollar at approximately 772.54 bolívares for August 17, 2026. The euro has also maintained a high value, trading near 894.49 bolívares.

In addition to currency fluctuations, the BCV has officially updated the fee schedule for the national banking system. New regulations, published in Official Gazette No. 43,427, establish higher limits for various services. Key changes include a minimum commission of 14 bolívares for mobile payments (Pago Móvil) and a new cap of 54 bolívares for ATM inquiries, transfers, and account maintenance.

On the policy front, economist Asdrúbal Oliveros has proposed reforming the BCV as part of negotiations between the government and the opposition. He suggests appointing a new board of directors with technical credentials and true autonomy to restore institutional credibility and stabilize the economy. Meanwhile, a new law regarding residential lease agreements has been published, allowing for rental contracts to be settled in foreign currency or bolívares at the official BCV rate.
