Reserve Bank of Australia raises cash rate to 4.6% FAST-MOVING

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has unanimously voted to increase the cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.6%, marking the fourth rate hike of 2026. This decision brings the interest rate to its highest level since 2011.

The RBA board cited persistent inflation risks, driven by global energy price volatility and disruptions to oil supplies, alongside domestic capacity pressures. The board indicated it remains prepared to implement further tightening if necessary to return inflation to its 2% to 3% target band.

The rate hike is expected to significantly impact mortgage holders. For an average $731,000 loan, monthly repayments are projected to rise by approximately $121. Industry experts and organizations, such as Master Builders Australia, have warned that sustained high rates could trigger a downturn in the construction sector and increase financial strain on households.
