Central banks increase gold reserves amid shifting price forecasts
Central bankers are reinforcing the role of gold as a critical reserve asset. At the LBMA conference in Sorrento, Sergio Nicoletti Altimari of the Banca d’Italia highlighted gold’s crisis-management functions. Similarly, Joachim Nagel, President of the Deutsche Bundesbank, noted that gold remains a vital tool for diversification against the credit risks associated with high sovereign debt, as physical gold held domestically is less vulnerable to sanctions than foreign securities.
A World Gold Council survey of 76 central banks indicates growing interest, with 45 percent expecting to increase their gold holdings within the next year. Furthermore, over 80 percent of respondents anticipate a higher global share of gold within five years.
In the private sector, major financial institutions are adjusting their market outlooks. HSBC and Bank of America have revised their gold price projections. HSBC lowered its expected annual average for 2026 to $4,490 per ounce and its 2027 estimate to $4,825 per ounce. While gold has seen recent rallies, analysts are monitoring oil prices and central bank demand patterns as key drivers for future price stability and potential corrections.
