Palestinian Central Elections Commission opens 2026 legislative nominations

The Palestinian Central Elections Commission has officially opened the nomination period for the 2026 legislative elections. Registration for candidate lists began on Saturday, September 26, at the commission's headquarters in Al-Bireh, West Bank, and its office in Deir al-Balah, Gaza Strip.

Candidates must run via electoral lists rather than individual nominations. Each list is required to have a minimum of 16 and a maximum of 132 candidates, while also adhering to legal requirements for female representation. The nomination period is scheduled to last for 12 days, concluding on Wednesday, October 7.

The general election is set for Saturday, November 28. This marks the first attempt at legislative elections in approximately 20 years, following a long period of institutional paralysis. While the commission has reported high interest from potential candidates, political figures have raised concerns regarding field obstacles in Gaza and Jerusalem, as well as the logistical challenges posed by the current regional situation.
