Central Equatoria communities demand Juba-Kaya road repairs

Residents and motorists in Central Equatoria State are calling for urgent government intervention to repair the Juba-Lainya-Yei-Kaya road and address systemic transit issues. Local communities in Yei River, Lainya, and Morobo counties are urging Vice President Dr. James Wani Igga and Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony to resume roadwork and bridge repairs ahead of the December 2026 general elections. They argue that the current state of the road disrupts the movement of people, goods, and essential services.

In addition to poor infrastructure, drivers report significant economic strain caused by an excessive number of checkpoints. Motorists operating between Juba, Yei, and Kaya claim they encounter as many as 30 checkpoints where they are required to make various payments. These costs, combined with vehicle damage from potholes and increased fuel expenses, are driving up passenger fares and threatening the livelihoods of transport workers.
