Europe and Hungary face rapid warming and agricultural risks

Climate researchers from ELTE report that Europe is warming significantly faster than the global average. This trend is driven by changing atmospheric circulation, shrinking snow cover, and the paradox of cleaner air, which reduces aerosol-driven cooling. In Hungary, the climate is increasingly resembling parts of Spain and Greece, with dry-to-semi-dry conditions now covering 64 percent of the country.

These shifts pose serious risks to agriculture, particularly wheat production. Researchers note that wheat maturation has moved approximately three weeks earlier over the last 50 years. Changing precipitation patterns further complicate yields, as moisture timing relative to plant growth is critical.

Regarding immediate weather, Hungary is experiencing a transition from summer heat to autumnal patterns. While recent days have seen temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, incoming cold fronts are expected to bring temporary cooling and variable cloud cover. Long-term forecasts suggest a warmer-than-average autumn for Central Europe, characterized by higher temperatures and potential increases in convective precipitation and thunderstorms.
