Central European agriculture faces massive losses from drought and frost

Agricultural sectors in Central Europe are facing significant economic distress due to extreme weather conditions. In the Czech Republic, the Agricultural Chamber estimates revenue losses of at least 25.6 billion CZK, driven by severe drought, spring frosts, and high input costs. Key sectors affected include cereals, oilseeds, fruit, sugar beets, and livestock, with the dairy and pig sectors seeing multi-billion CZK impacts.

Fruit growers in the Czech Republic report devastating losses, with apple harvests estimated at only 53 percent of the five-year average and cherry production expected at less than 60 percent. In response, Czech and Polish authorities are seeking emergency financial assistance from European Union funds.

In Slovakia, the Slovak Agricultural and Food Chamber (SPPK) confirmed significant declines in grain yields. Winter wheat yields fell by 17 percent to 5.41 t/ha, while spring wheat saw a 23 percent decrease. The harvest was noted as one of the longest in a decade, spanning 92 days, exacerbated by spring droughts that left soil lacking between 70 and 200 millimeters of water in certain regions.
