Central European heatwave shatters temperature records in Germany and Czech Republic

A severe heat wave across Central Europe has set new temperature records. In eastern Germany, a night temperature of 29.4 °C was recorded in Kubšiča, while daytime highs reached 41.7 °C at the Košene station near the Polish border, the highest night‑time reading in the country in 150 years. The Czech Republic also broke its record, measuring 41.1 °C in Doksana, north of Prague, for the second consecutive day.

The extreme heat spread to neighboring nations: Poland logged 40.5 °C in Slubic, and Romania issued a red heat‑wave alert. The World Health Organization warned that excess deaths in Europe since June 21 are over 1,300 above normal, with France reporting roughly 1,000 additional fatalities. German police used water trucks to cool residents, and at least seven heat‑related deaths have been confirmed in Germany.

Meteorological services attribute the wave to climate‑change‑driven extreme weather, noting a rise in the number of days above 30 °C across the region.
