Central Italy earthquake reconstruction faces scrutiny ten years later

As the tenth anniversary of the August 24, 2016, earthquake in Central Italy approaches, discussions regarding the state of reconstruction and community survival have resurfaced.

Politician Francesco Ameli has raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of current reconstruction efforts. While acknowledging an increase in construction sites and spending capacity, Ameli warns against confusing financial expenditure with the actual rebirth of territories. He argues that territorial marketing, tourism, and cultural events cannot replace essential policies for internal areas, such as providing jobs, medical services, and measures to halt depopulation.

In a related commemoration of the disaster, Luca Cari, a national spokesperson for the National Fire Corps, has released a book titled ‘Salvare vite’ (Saving Lives). The volume provides firsthand accounts from firefighters who participated in the rescue operations in areas like Amatrice, documenting the emotional and physical challenges faced during the immediate aftermath of the seismic event.
