Central Italy reconstruction efforts marked by progress and challenges

Ten years after the 2016 earthquake that struck Central Italy, regional leaders met in Arquata del Tronto to evaluate the reconstruction process. The conference, titled “Centro Italia 2016–2026: il cammino della ricostruzione,” brought together representatives from Marche, Umbria, Abruzzo, and Lazio.

Federico Gori, president of Anci Umbria, emphasized that true reconstruction must go beyond rebuilding physical structures. He argued that for communities to survive, reconstruction must include essential services such as schools, healthcare, transportation, and economic opportunities to prevent depopulation and ensure residents have the right to stay or return to their territories.

Marco Marsilio, president of the Abruzzo Region, noted significant progress in administrative efficiency but highlighted ongoing challenges. He called for further simplification of bureaucratic procedures to prevent delays that leave citizens waiting to return to their homes. Marsilio stressed that administrative delays in past emergencies, such as the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake, resulted in higher economic costs due to rising prices and the need for prolonged temporary housing.
