Central Kalimantan declares emergency as fires burn 3,000+ hectares
Over 3,069 hectares of forest and peatland have burned in Central Kalimantan, prompting provincial and district authorities to raise disaster status. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) coordinated an inter‑agency response after a directive from President Prabowo Subianto.
The regency of Kotawaringin Timur declared a 28‑day emergency response on 30 July, citing hundreds of hotspots and severe drought linked to an extended El Niño. Bupati Halikinnor noted the near‑absence of rain and the increasing fire risk.
Governor Agustiar Sabran, accompanied by police and military chiefs, visited the Pulang Pisau district to oversee firefighting operations. About 9 ha were actively burning, with an additional 15 ha emitting thick smoke. Aerial patrols and water‑bombing helicopters—72 drops by an AS332C1 and 82 drops by an EH‑60A—were deployed, alongside a local task force, to contain the blaze.
