Central Kalimantan forest fires reach 180 hectares
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reports that forest and land fires in Central Kalimantan have affected approximately 180 hectares. Ground task forces have successfully extinguished about 150 hectares, leaving roughly 30 hectares still requiring attention.
Authorities warn that the situation remains unstable as new fire spots continue to emerge daily. There is a significant risk of re-ignition in areas where peatland has already been extinguished. Additionally, thick haze has become a major concern, though officials noted there is currently no technology capable of directly eliminating smoke.
To combat the fires and mitigate haze, the government is implementing Weather Modification Operations (OMC) to induce rainfall. Due to low visibility at Cilik Riwut Airport, OMC aircraft will be relocated to Syamsudin Noor Airport and Pangkalan Bun Airport to continue operations based on meteorological forecasts.
