Indonesia forest fires escalate across Kalimantan and Sumatra
Indonesia is facing a significant escalation in forest and land fires (karhutla), particularly across Kalimantan and Sumatra. The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) notes that fire activity this dry season is stronger than in recent years. In Kalimantan, the Ministry of Forestry has identified thousands of hotspots, with smoke spreading across borders to Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore, leading to school closures in those regions.
The health impact is severe, with over 4.2 million people in seven provinces affected by haze. Medical experts warn that fine particulate matter (PM2.5) poses long-term risks to respiratory and brain health, especially in children.
Governmental responses include the deployment of 200 water pumps by the Ministry of Agriculture and weather modification operations in South Sumatra. Law enforcement is also intensifying; in Riau, 40 suspects have been detained for intentional land clearing, often for palm oil plantations. President Prabowo Subianto has signaled that the state will not compromise with corporations found responsible, stating that business licenses may be revoked if companies are implicated in land burning.
