Central Macedonia approves revised waste management plan

The Regional Council of Central Macedonia has approved a revised Regional Waste Management Plan (PESDA), shifting the focus from waste processing to recovery and recycling.

According to Socrates Dori, Vice Regional Prefect for Development and Environment, the current recycling rate in Central Macedonia is 15%. The new plan aims to increase this rate to 60% by 2030 and 65% by 2035, while limiting landfilling to below 10%.

The strategy includes the establishment of three recovery and recycling units in the eastern and western sectors of Thessaloniki and in Serres. Additionally, six waste processing units are planned to extend organic waste collection services to Chalkidiki, Imathia, Pella, Veria, and Pieria.
