Central Macedonia launches aerial mosquito control over Thessaloniki and Pieria
The Central Macedonia Region of Greece began aerial insecticide spraying on 11 June 2026 to curb mosquito populations in Thessaloniki and the Pieria regional unit. The operation covers roughly 30,000‑45,000 hectares of rice‑field areas, focusing on irrigation zones such as Chalkastras, Agios Athanasios, Vrachias, and Aiginio.
The spray program is part of a three‑year integrated mosquito‑control plan for 2026‑2028, authorised by the Regional Health and Social Solidarity Directorate and carried out with approved chemicals under the supervision of scientific staff. The timing follows recent drainage of the rice fields and anticipates higher temperatures that could boost mosquito activity.
