Central Macedonia opens cooled shelters amid extreme heatwave

The Region of Central Macedonia in Greece announced the opening of an air‑conditioned reception area in the Regional Services building on 26 October Street, West Thessaloniki. The shelter operates daily from 08:00 to 18:00 for residents who need protection from the ongoing heatwave.

The General Directorate of Public Health and Social Care issued heat‑wave protection guidelines, advising people to stay in cooled spaces, wear light clothing, hats and UV‑protective sunglasses, avoid direct sun exposure—especially infants and the elderly—and limit heavy physical work. Additional recommendations include taking cool showers, eating light meals rich in fruit and vegetables, staying well hydrated, avoiding alcohol, and consulting doctors for chronic health conditions. Facilities such as workplaces and care homes are urged to ensure adequate cooling or ventilation.

Deputy Regional Governor for Health and Social Solidarity Melina‑Maria Dermentzopoulou emphasized the seriousness of the heatwave, stating, «Ο καύσωνας είναι ένα έντονο καιρικό φαινόμενο και αποτελεί σοβαρή δοκιμασία για τη δημόσια υγεία…» and underscoring the need to protect vulnerable groups.
